A Comprehensive Guide To Washington EV Rebates, Tax Credits & Incentives

Washington is a national leader in EV adoption and has adopted California’s Advanced Clean Cars II regulations, which require all new passenger vehicle sales to be zero‑emission by 2035, with gradual adoption targets beginning in 2026.

But beyond the state’s progressive initiatives to support sustainable transportation and drive down travel costs for residents thanks to the low energy rates across the region, the state of Washington has also implemented a number of incentives and programs to foster EV adoption.

Does Washington have EV rebates?

As of 2026 there are currently no statewide incentives, rebates, or tax credits for purchasing or leasing EVs in Washington. All funds allocated to the WA EV Instant Rebate Program have been claimed.

However, you can still save money when driving electric by taking advantage of local EV charger rebates and time-of-use charging rates.

Washington State Sales Tax Exemption for EVs

Washington offers a state sales and use tax exemption for qualifying new and used EVs:

• New EVs priced at $45,000 or less qualify for a tax exemption on up to $15,000 of the vehicle price
• Used EVs priced at $30,000 or less qualify for a tax exemption on up to $16,000

The exemption is applied at the point of sale or lease through the Washington Department of Revenue.

Utility Rebates for New & Used EVs

Utilities in Washington state have their own electrification programs for energy transition technologies like electric cars. 

For example, Clark Public Utilities (CPU) offers low-income residential customers a rebate of up to $2,000 for the purchase of a used EV. The vehicle purchase price may not exceed $20,000 and must be registered in Clark County. For more information, see the CPU Electric Vehicle Program website.

CPU EV Charger Rebate

Clark Public Utilities (CPU) offers residential customers rebates for the purchase and installation of a Level 2 EV charger, from $100 to $500, with higher rebates for ENERGY STAR-certified chargers with Wi-Fi capabilities.

Clark Public Utilities (CPU) also offers commercial and industrial customers rebates for the purchase and installation of a Level 2 EV charger, up to $500. Chargers must be ENERGY STAR-certified and Wi-Fi enabled.

Additionally, commercial and industrial customers who deploy a Level 3/DC Fast EV charger may qualify for an annual account credit of $1,500 for each Level 3 charger. The Level 3 charger must be on rate schedule 134 (rate schedule 434 does not qualify for the demand charge bill credit incentive).

PUD EV Charger Rebate

Snohomish Public Utility District (PUD) offers residential customers a $50 rebate for the purchase and installation of a qualifying Level 2 ENERGY STAR-certified EV charger. Limit one rebate per home. For more information, see the Rebates for EV Chargers page on the Snohomish County PUD website.

TPU EV Charger Rebate

Tacoma Public Utility (TPU) offers residential customers a $400 rebate, in the form of bill credit, for the installation of a Level 2 EV charger, a smart splitter, or a 240-volt outlet. Washington EV Charger Grants

The Washington State Department of Ecology offers grants for the purchase and installation of Level 2 EV chargers for use at public, workplace, tribal, and multifamily housing locations. The maximum grant award is $10,000 per plug, up to 10 plugs. Eligible applicants include multifamily housing, nonprofit organizations, state and local government entities, businesses, and tribal governments. Applicants located in environmental justice communities will be given funding priority.

Does Washington Have EV Charger Tax Credits?

As of July 2026, Washington does not have a state-wide tax credit for EV chargers, and two federal programs, the Alternative Fuel Vehicle Refueling Property Credit and the 30C tax credit, both expired on June 30th, 2026.

From border to border, Washington’s Alternative Fuel Corridors (AFCs) that offer EV charging extend 276 miles along major highways within the state, including Interstate 5, US 2, and I-90, with charging stations every 40 to 60 miles to ensure EV drivers have accessible charging options along their route.

Latest NEVI & EV Infrastructure Updates

Washington is advancing its National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure (NEVI) program through WSDOT. After a temporary federal funding pause in 2025, Round 1 awards were announced in January 2026: $12.16 million to five companies for 14 new DC fast-charging stations (96 ports total) along I-90, US 97, US 195, and US 395. Construction is expected over the next two years.

The state continues updating its NEVI Deployment Plan, with Round 2 and FY2026 funding targeted at remaining corridors to ensure seamless coverage. This supports Washington’s zero-emission goals and growing EV adoption.

As of July 2026, Washington has more than 3,200 public charging stations including over 2,700 Level 2 and more than 500 DC fast stations. There are 86 Tesla Supercharger stations and 974 Tesla Supercharger ports in Washington.

Are There Free EV Charging Stations in Washington?

Yes, you can find free EV charging stations in Washington including in Seattle with over 800 free EV charging stations, nearly 400 free locations in Bellevue, and over 140 free EV charging stations in Spokane.

When traveling between cities, you can look for free EV charging stations at rest areas on I-5, U.S. Route 2, and some parts of I-90.
