Does South Dakota Have EV Rebates?

As of 2026, South Dakota does not currently offer a state-level EV rebate.

Sioux Valley Energy EV Rebate Program

Residents who live in the Sioux Valley Energy electric service territory and purchase an all-electric or plug-in hybrid electric vehicle can take advantage of the following rebates:

  • $500 for battery electric vehicle (BEV)
  • $250 for plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV)

Six utility providers in South Dakota offer EV charger rebates:

Black Hills Energy South Dakota EV Charger Rebates

The Black Hills Energy Ready EV program provides cash rebates to offset the costs of EV charging equipment and installation for customers that receive their electric service in South Dakota.

For residential customers, a rebate of up to $500 is available for installing a 240-volt Level 2 charger. Black Hills requires a qualified electrician install the charging station and its dedicated circuit.

For commercial customers, rebates worth up to $3,000 per port are available for installing Level 2 EV chargers.

Additional rebates may be available from Black Hills Energy for installing DC fast charging stations, and participants are encouraged to contact ReadyEV@blackhillscorp.com to confirm rebate amounts and eligible equipment.

Bright Energy Solutions EV Charger Rebates

Bright Energy Solutions offers residential customers rebates ranging from $150 to $500 for qualifying Level 2 EV charger installations, depending on the charger model selected. Higher rebate amounts may be available for approved smart chargers, subject to program guidelines and available funding.

Cavalier Rural Electric Cooperative EV Charger Rebates

Cavalier Rural Electric Cooperative offers rebates worth up to $500 (or $50 per kWh of charging capacity) for residential Level 2 charger installations. Businesses can also claim rebates for Level 2 and DC Fast Charging projects.

Nodak Electric Cooperative EV Charger Rebate

Nodak Electric offers rebates worth up to $750 (or $50 per kWh of charging capacity) for Level 2 chargers. Members must participate in Nodak’s load control program for EVs.

North Central Electric Cooperative EV Charger Rebates

North Central Electric Cooperative offers rebates worth up to $250 per Level 2 charger. There is a maximum of two charging port rebates per residential customer home, and six charging port rebates per commercial building or facility. All chargers must be certified and listed by Underwriters Laboratories and Edison Testing Laboratories.

Otter Tail Power Company EV Charger Rebate

Otter Tail Power Company members can claim a $500 rebate for installing a Level 2 charger and enrolling in a qualified off-peak rate.

A hardwired Level 2 charger must be installed on a qualified off-peak rate, including Dual Fuel, Deferred Load, Fixed Time of Delivery, or RDC.

Does South Dakota Have EV Charger Tax Credits?

South Dakota does not have a state-wide tax credit for EV chargers, but residents may qualify for the Alternative Fuel Vehicle Refueling Property Credit which is a federal tax credit worth up to $1,000 to offset costs related to installing an EV charger at home.

Additionally, businesses may qualify for the 30C tax credit, worth up to $100,000 per installed EV charging port and available until June 30, 2026.

EV Charging Rates in South Dakota

Otter Tail Power Company offers a number of special rates that may be advantageous for EV drivers, including their Dual Fuel, Deferred Load, Fixed Time of Delivery, and RDC Rates. Contact the Otter Tail Power customer service team to learn more.

Nodak Electric Cooperative

Nodak Electric Cooperative offers a preferred charging rate for EVs with a rate of $0.06 per kWh in effect from 12 a.m. to 10 a.m. from June to September. From October through May, you can charge your EV at this rate from 12 p.m. to 5 p.m. and again from 11 p.m. to 7 a.m. To qualify, you must enroll in the utility’s load control program.

North Central Electric Cooperative

The cooperative’s time-of-use rate allows you to spend $0.04 per kWh less during off-peak hours. This lower rate is available from 10 p.m. to 2 p.m. the next day in the summer. In the winter, you can get this rate from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. the next day. You’ll have to contact the utility for more details on pricing.

Verendrye Electric Cooperative

As a member of this electric cooperative, you can get a reduced rate from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. by enrolling in a load control program. You’ll have to contact the utility to get more details.
