Nevada Electric Vehicle Tax Credits, Rebates and Incentives
Nevada is one U.S. state currently making significant strides in expanding its electric vehicle (EV) charging network by leveraging public and private investments.
If you already own an EV or are considering making the switch, there are numerous incentives and programs designed to support your electrification journey and make it easier and more affordable to drive electric in Nevada.
Although there are currently no state electrification rebates available, Nevada residents can still utilize federal EV charging rebates and tax credits to save on their EV purchases.
Additionally, the state is actively developing its charging infrastructure, creating an environment that has supported the adoption of over 45,000 EVs on Nevada roads as of 2024 by helping to reduce range anxiety and provide EV drivers with public EV charging infrastructure outside of at-home EV charging.
Plumas-Sierra Rural Electric Cooperative
While there are no statewide incentives to buying an EV, Plumas-Sierra Rural Electric Cooperative members can take advantage of a $500 rebate when purchasing an electric vehicle.
This incentive is available to drivers registered in Plumas, Sierra, Lassen, or Washoe Counties who are replacing a gas-powered vehicle with an EV.
To receive the rebate, you will also need to provide proof that your home is equipped with a properly installed EV charger.
Federal Tax Credits For Electric Vehicles
In addition to the above incentives for EVs, car buyers may also qualify for federal tax credits like the clean vehicle tax credit of up to $7,500 for new vehicles, or the used clean vehicle tax credit for up to $4,000. Income restrictions as well as battery component and critical mineral restrictions may apply. Be sure to speak to a qualified CPA or tax professional to check your eligibility.
Nevada EV Charger Rebates
In certain geographies across America, state entities and local utilities offer drivers rebates for purchasing and installing Level 2 EV chargers.
Nevada residents also have the opportunity to save on EV chargers thanks to programs offered by local utility companies within the state.
These utility initiatives help make home charging more accessible while further supporting the state’s shift toward a more sustainable future.
Lincoln County Power District
Residents who receive their electricity from the Lincoln County Power District can benefit from a program offering free EV chargers and installation services. In exchange, customers are expected to charge their EVs only from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m., which helps reduce grid strain.
NV Energy
As Nevada’s largest utility, NV Energy serves over 2.4 million customers across 44,000 square miles. As part of its $100 million investment in EV charging infrastructure, the utility is offering incentives to businesses and public entities for installing public EV charging stations.
For Level 2 EV charging projects, the incentive will cover 75% of the total project cost with a $30,000 cap or $3,000 per charging connector, depending on which amount is lower.
For DC Fast charging locations, NV Energy offers $400 per kWh, with a cap of $40,000.
EV Charging Rates in Nevada
Nevada residents can also save on EV charging by taking advantage of time-of-use (TOU) programs with a lower kWh rate when demand is lower at night.
NV Energy
NV Energy offers a time-of-use plan, offering rates of $0.50 per kWh during on-peak hours and a significantly reduced rate of only $0.09 per kWh during off-peak hours from 10 p.m. to 8 a.m.
The utility also provides time-of-use rates for business and multifamily properties, making cost-effective energy management accessible across different sectors.
Public EV Charging Stations in Nevada
Nevada is currently investing $38 million in NEVI funding to build EV charging stations along the state’s major highways.
The funding is also being used to issue grants for public charging stations, including financing a partnership between NV Energy and the state’s Office of Energy.
How Many Public EV Charging Stations Are in Nevada?
Nevada has over 2,000 public charging ports and more than 600 public charging stations including over 516 Level 2 and 116 DC Fast stations.
There are 49 Tesla Supercharger stations and 666 Tesla Supercharger ports in Nevada.
How Much Do Public EV Charging Stations Cost in Nevada?
Pricing varies from one location to another, but EV drivers should also expect DC Fast charging to be more expensive than Level 2 EV charging, although that is not always the case.
For example, the DC fast charging station in Alamo, NV, offers full charging sessions for just $2, while other public charging stations can charge a service fee in addition to higher rates per kWh.
If you rely on public EV charging stations in Nevada, it’s a good idea to see what is available and compare costs ahead of planning your next charging session.
Are There Free Electric Car Charging Stations in Nevada?
Nevada has several free EV charging stations, often offered by hotels and casinos. For instance, the Silverton Casino in Las Vegas and the Pepper Mill in Reno both offer free EV charging. Keep in mind that using free charging stations may also require you to be a guest or patron of the establishment.
Free EV charging in Nevada isn’t limited to just the hospitality industry—you can also find it in other locations and types of businesses, such as on the University of Nevada campus.
Where Are Public Charging Stations Located for Electric Cars in Nevada?
While Nevada is actively working to expand its EV charging infrastructure, public EV charging stations are currently more concentrated in urban areas and larger cities with higher population density such as Las Vegas, Reno, and Carson City.
Tesla has built a Supercharger network of fast charging stations throughout the state, with locations approximately 150 miles apart along I-80 and I-95.
Visit the U.S. Department of Energy’s Alternative Fuels Data Center Map of EV Charging Station Locations in Nevada, which can be sorted and filtered based on public access, charger type (Level 1, Level 2, DC Fast), and connector type (NACS, J1772, CCS, CHAdeMO).
Home Electrification Incentives in Nevada
In 2024, Nevada is expected to offer home energy rebates funded through the Inflation Reduction Act, making $47.9 million for home efficiency rebates and $96.1 million for home electrification available for things like appliance rebates, insulation and air sealing, heat pumps for space and water heating, and upgrades to smart electrical panels necessary to enable those retrofits.
Combining EV ownership with other electrification projects, such as upgrading your home with solar panels & battery storage, or investing in a heat pump, will help you save even more while reducing your environmental impact.
In Nevada, you may qualify for home electrification incentives through your electricity provider in addition to the U.S. federal government. Scroll down to read rebate and incentive details for specific home electrification technologies.
Battery Storage
Currently there are no state or utility incentives for battery storage in Nevada. However, the 25D Residential Clean Energy Tax Credit provides a 30% federal tax credit on the cost of new battery storage systems size 3kWh and larger.
Electrical Panels
The 25C Energy Efficient Home Improvement Tax Credit provides a federal tax credit for electrical panel upgrades needed to complete electrification projects like heat pumps and heat pump water heaters (up to 30% of project costs, capped at $600). The 25C tax credit can be used by renters, and homeowners making upgrades to their primary or secondary home.
Qualifying electrical panels must meet the standards of the National Electric Code (NEC) and have a capacity of 200 Amps or more. This means that your new/upgraded panel must be able to serve a load of at least 200 Amps, but you don’t need 200 Amps of incoming utility service. Smart panels may qualify if they allow you to serve a load of 200 Amps.
If you’re claiming 25D for a residential solar or battery storage project and the installation required you to upgrade your main panel, you may be able to apply 25D to electrical panel costs as well.
Heat Pumps & Heat Pump Water Heaters
Utilities in Nevada may have special programs for upgrading to heat pumps and heat pump water heaters. NV Energy offers rebates up to $1,020 to install an air source heat pump with a rating of 17.2 SEER (or equivalent SEER2).
The 25C Energy Efficient Home Improvement Tax Credit also applies to heat pumps and heat pump water heaters. A 30% federal tax credit is available (capped at $2,000 dollars). Eligible technologies must meet certain energy efficiency requirements.
Solar Panels
There are no state tax credits or utility rebates available for going solar in Nevada.
The 25D Residential Clean Energy Tax Credit provides a 30% federal tax credit on the cost of photovoltaic (PV) solar panel systems.
