Idaho EV Tax Credits, Incentives, and EV Rebates

In this guide, we explore Idaho’s EV tax credits, rebates, and incentives, highlighting how these initiatives can help residents make the switch to driving electric.

Idaho EV Tax Credits

Idaho does not have a state-wide EV tax credit, but residents may qualify for federal EV tax credits like the $7,500 clean vehicle tax credit for new vehicles, or the $4,000 used clean vehicle tax credit. Income restrictions as well as battery component and critical mineral restrictions may apply. Be sure to speak to a qualified CPA or tax professional to check your eligibility.

Additionally, the Alternative Fuel Vehicle Refueling Property Credit provides a federal tax credit up to $1,000 to offset costs related to installing an EV charger at home. Businesses can claim EV charger tax credits worth up to $100,000.

Idaho EV Charger Rebates

Charging your EV at home is both affordable and convenient. To achieve the best charging speed with your residential electrical infrastructure, it is essential to install a Level 2 EV charger with the help of a qualified EV charger installation professional.

One utility providers in Idaho offers EV charger rebate programs, with average an rebate amount of $350 dollars:

Kootenai Electric Cooperative EV Charger Rebate

Kootenai Electric Cooperative offers homeowners an EV charger rebate of up to $350 toward the purchase of an at-home Level 2 charger.

The cooperative also offers custom rebates for businesses, so be sure to contact them to inquire about rebates for your commercial EV charging station installation.

EV Charging Rates in Idaho

To further help EV owners reduce charging costs by encouraging off-peak charging, utilities in Idaho offer time-of-use (TOU) electricity rates designed to lower the cost of charging EVs.

These TOU plans incentivize vehicle charging during off-peak hours, making EV ownership more affordable and supporting grid resilience.

Idaho Power

Idaho Power customers can save on EV charging by enrolling in the utility’s seasonal time-of-use rate. In the summer, you’ll pay $0.24 per kWh from 7 p.m. to 11 p.m., $0.12 per kWh from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. and only $0.06 per kWh if you charge from 11 p.m. to 3 p.m.

During the winter, you’ll pay $0.12 per kWh from 6 a.m. to 9 a.m. and from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Outside of these hours, you’ll pay $0.08 per kWh.

Riverside Electric Cooperative

This cooperative uses a flexible pricing model where energy charges add up to a flat rate you pay for service. Your energy charge fluctuates based on the time of day, so charging your EV during mid-peak or off-peak times will reduce your bill.

Off-peak hours last from 11 p.m. to 6 a.m. year-round and come with an energy charge of $0.10 per kWh. On-peak hours begin at 4 p.m. and end at 7 p.m. in the winter and have a wintertime energy charge of $0.14 per kWh. You’ll pay $0.19 per kWh during summertime on-peak hours, which start at 2 p.m. and end at 7 p.m. Outside of these hours, the mid-peak energy charge applies, which costs $0.11 per kWh in the winter and $0.12 per kWh in the summer.

Note that your mid-peak and on-peak energy charges can be higher if your energy usage is over a certain threshold, which makes charging your EV during off-peak hours even more beneficial.

Rocky Mountain Power

Rocky Mountain Power’s time-of-use plan uses seasonal time-based pricing. You’ll pay $0.14 per kWh from May to October between 8 a.m. and 11 p.m. and drop to $0.05 per kWh at night. Between November and April, electricity will cost $0.12 per kWh from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. and only $0.04 per kWh at night.

Public EV Charging Stations in Idaho

Idaho currently has more than 200 EV charging stations across the state, and the number is steadily growing as the state utilizes NEVI funding to develop more stations along major travel corridors.

How Many Public EV Charging Stations Are in Idaho?

As of April 2025, Idaho has over 200 public charging stations including 150 Level 2 and 65 DC Fast stations. There are 562 public EV charging ports, 8 Tesla Supercharger stations and 74 Tesla Supercharger ports in Idaho.

How Much Do Public EV Charging Stations Cost in Idaho?

Public charging tends to be very affordable throughout Idaho. For example, Idaho State University only charges $1.30 for an hour of Level 2 charging for campus visitors. Are There Free EV Charging Stations in Idaho?

Although most public chargers aren’t free, you can still find free EV charging options located throughout the state.

The City of Boise offers a few free EV charging stations such as at the Boise Airport, on E Riverwalk Drive, and at the Library at Ustick & Cole. Your local auto dealership is also a great place to check if you’re looking for free charging options.

Where Are Public EV Charging Stations Located in Idaho?

Charging stations are also positioned along major roadways like I-84, enabling reliable EV travel for longer distances within and through Idaho.

Visit the U.S. Department of Energy’s Alternative Fuels Data Center Map of EV Charging Station Locations in Idaho, which can be sorted and filtered based on public access, charger type (Level 1, Level 2, DC Fast), and connector type (NACS, J1772, CCS, CHAdeMO).

Home Electrification Incentives in Idaho

Combining EV ownership with other electrification projects, such as upgrading your home with solar panels & battery storage, or investing in a heat pump, will help you save even more while reducing your environmental impact.

You may qualify for home electrification incentives through your local electricity provider in addition to the U.S. federal government. Scroll down to read tax credit and incentive details for specific home electrification technologies.

Battery Storage

The 25D Residential Clean Energy Tax Credit provides a 30% federal tax credit on the cost of new battery storage systems size 3kWh and larger.

Electrical Panels

The 25C Energy Efficient Home Improvement Tax Credit provides a federal tax credit for electrical panel upgrades needed to complete electrification projects like heat pumps and heat pump water heaters (up to 30% of project costs, capped at $600). The 25C tax credit can be used by renters, and homeowners making upgrades to their primary or secondary home.

Qualifying electrical panels must meet the standards of the National Electric Code (NEC) and have a capacity of 200 Amps or more. This means that your new/upgraded panel must be able to serve a load of at least 200 Amps, but you don’t need 200 Amps of incoming utility service. Smart panels may qualify if they allow you to serve a load of 200 Amps.

If you’re claiming 25D for a residential solar or battery storage project and the installation required you to upgrade your main panel, you may be able to apply 25D to electrical panel costs as well.

Heat Pumps & Heat Pump Water Heaters

The 25C Energy Efficient Home Improvement Tax Credit also applies to heat pumps and heat pump water heaters. A 30% federal tax credit is available (capped at $2,000 dollars). Eligible technologies must meet certain energy efficiency requirements.

Solar Panels

The 25D Residential Clean Energy Tax Credit also provides a 30% federal tax credit on the cost of photovoltaic (PV) solar panel systems.
