Powering over 2 million homes and businesses across central Arizona, the Salt River Project (SRP) isn’t your typical utility company.

As a non-profit and community-based utility, the SRP delivers low-cost power while also supporting community-wide goals for a better future. The utility is currently on a mission to eliminate grid-related carbon emissions by 2050, improve water resiliency, and support the adoption of 500,000 electric vehicles by 2035 over its 2,800-square-mile territory.

For utility customers eyeing an electric vehicle (EV) purchase, the utility also helps make the switch easier with its SRP EV charger rebate, a special EV charging rate, and a partnership with Qmerit—North America’s leading provider of EV charger installations and other electrification services.

Top Things to Know About the SRP EV Rebate

In the past, the SRP offered a rebate on EV purchases. While this program is no longer available, SRP will award you $50 as a bill credit for joining its EV community. This offer is open to anyone who buys or leases an EV within the SRP service territory.

You can further maximize savings on your EV purchase by pairing this incentive with the income-based federal EV tax credit as well as additional Arizona electrification incentives.

Save $250 on an EV Charger

At-home EV charging is a simple electrical upgrade that gives you the convenience of 24/7 charging at an affordable residential rate.

Thanks to the SRP EV charger rebate, you can save $250 on the charging equipment needed for at-home charging, sometimes also referred to as EVSE or electric vehicle supply equipment. You can get the rebate as an instant discount if you choose from one of the four chargers available in the SRP marketplace, including hardwired and plug-in models with capacities ranging from 40 to 50 amps.

If you prefer a different EV charger or want a larger selection to choose between, there are also 18 Level 2 EV chargers that are eligible for the SRP plug-in and save rebate. You can purchase any of these models from a third-party vendor and still qualify for the rebate by filling out an SRP rebate application within 90 days of your purchase. Note that the SRP might inspect the charger installation before issuing the rebate.

Charge Your EV for Less

Did you know that the time of day you charge your EV can have a significant impact on how much you pay? With EV-related electricity consumption increasing by more than 50% from 2023 to 2024, utilities like the SRP are actively managing this growing demand through time-of-use (TOU) plans.

Essentially, a TOU is a plan that encourages and incentivizes consumers to shift their electricity usage to periods of lower demand by providing reduced rates during these preferred hours. Under a TOU billing structure, electricity generally costs more during peak demand and is offered at a discount during off-peak times although the times and rates can vary depending on the utility and the season.

This approach reduces the strain on the grid during peak hours and helps keep production costs low. It also puts utilities in a position to prioritize sustainable energy sources rather than increasing fossil fuel usage to keep up with peak demand.

TOU billing is especially useful for EV owners. A Level 2 charger can use 7 to 19 kW, which is significantly more than the average household appliance. To give you an idea, a fridge typically uses 0.3 to 0.8 kW. By shifting your EV charging to off-peak hours, you can save substantially over the years.

Saving Money with the SRP EV Price Plan

The SRP EV Price Plan is designed specifically for EV owners. If you decide to enroll, you’ll pay a flat monthly demand charge of $20 and the remainder of your bill will reflect your electricity usage across three time periods.

These time periods and their associated prices vary from one season to another. From November to April, a rate of $0.12 per kWh is in effect during off-peak hours between 5 a.m. and 9 p.m., as well as from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. You’ll pay $0.10 per kWh during off-peak hours from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and again from 9 p.m. to 11 p.m. The super-off-peak rate of $0.08 per kWh applies from 11 p.m. to 5 a.m.

Summer pricing applies in May, June, September, and October. The super-off-peak rate remains the same, but the on-peak period shifts from 2 p.m. to 8 p.m. and comes with a rate of $0.22 per kWh. From 5 a.m. to 2 p.m. and 8 p.m. to 11 p.m., you’ll pay the off-peak rate of $0.09 per kWh.

In July and August, the same rates and time periods apply, except for the on-peak rate, which increases to $0.26 per kWh in the afternoon.

You can enroll for a 90-day trial of this plan, and if you ultimately decide it’s not a good option for you, you still have the option to go back to your original billing plan.
