Montana has been slow in adopting electric vehicles (EVs), but thanks to varied programs, electrification could speed up.

These programs include time-of-use plans from some Montana utilities and the city of Missoula, which is developing its EV charging infrastructure.

Read on to learn more about the different Montana EV rebate programs available and how to save on EV adoption.

Montana EV Rebates

At the moment, there are no Montana EV rebate programs available. Thanks to a federal tax credit, you can still save on your EV purchase, and you’ll see considerable savings at the pump as you drive electric.

Federal Tax Credit

There are two tax credits you can claim when filing your federal taxes:

Before filing your taxes, make sure to carefully review the conditions for claiming these credits. The first credit only applies to some EV models, and you might not get the full amount based on your income. You should also know that it’s a nonrefundable credit, which means you can claim to offset any tax balance you owe, but it won’t increase your tax return.

The second credit is available only to those who live in low-income or non-urban areas. You can stack these credits, and businesses can claim them when purchasing electric fleet vehicles or building an EV fleet charging infrastructure.

Montana EV Charger Rebates

There are no Montana utilities offering rebates on EV car chargers at the moment. Contacting your local utility to express your interest in EV adoption could help. You can also claim the Alternative Fuel Vehicle Refueling Property Creditmentioned above instead of a Montana EV rebate.

Montana EV Charging Rates for Residents

Compared to the other Mountain states, Montana has some low energy rates, with residents paying an average of $0.11 per kWh. These low electricity prices alone make switching to an EV interesting. Still, you can save even more by taking advantage of time-of-use electricity rates if your utility offers one of these plans.

Montana-Dakota Utilities

Montana-Dakota Utilities helps you save on EV charging with an optional time-of-use plan. If you sign up, you’ll pay $0.06 per kWh during off-peak hours, which last from 8 p.m. until 12 p.m. the next day. From 12 p.m. to 8 p.m., the on-peak rate is in effect, and you’ll pay $0.07 per kWh between May and October or $0.10 per kWh between June and September.

Northwestern Energy

The largest electricity provider in Montana has a pilot time-of-use program available to its customers in Helena, MT.

If you sign up, you’ll save by switching your EV charging to off-peak or middle periods. Off-peak pricing is only in effectfrom January through December between 12 a.m. and 7 a.m.

The middle period applies from 7 a.m. to 8 a.m., 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., and 11 p.m. to 12 a.m. between January and December. Between April and September, you’ll get that middle rate from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. and again from 8 p.m. to 11 p.m. From January to March and October to December, the middle period starts at 1 p.m. and ends at 6 p.m.

On-peak prices apply outside of off-peak and middle periods.

Your TOU rate is half the standard rate during off-peak periods, 80% during the middle period, and 150% during on-peak hours. With the standard rate currently being $0.15 per kWh, you’ll pay $0.07, $0.12, or $0.22 per kWh during these respective periods.

Powder River Energy Corp

The Powder River Energy Corporation has an optional time-of-use plan that allows you to charge your EV for as little as $0.06 per kWh. This rate is in effect between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. and again from 9 p.m. to 5 p.m. from October through May. Between June and September, you’ll pay this low rate between 9 p.m. and 10 a.m. the next day.

Outside of these hours, you’ll pay the on-peak rate of $0.10 per kWh. Note that time-of-use pricing stops between June and August, when you’ll pay $0.09 per kWh for all usage.
