Electric vehicles (EVs) aren’t common in Mississippi, but it doesn’t mean you can’t benefit from going electric.

Thanks to the state’s affordable electricity rates, driving an EV could help you save thousands over the years. You can also take advantage of incentives like tax rebates or programs from utilities to pay less for your EV purchase.

Read on to learn more about going electric and how you can save with a Mississippi EV rebate.

Mississippi EV Rebates

There are no Mississippi EV rebate programs available at the moment. It’s possible that the state or local utilities willoffer incentives in the future, and you can claim a federal tax credit in the meantime.

Federal Tax Credit

As long as you meet certain income limits set by the IRS and pick an eligible EV model, you can claim a federal tax credit of up to $7,500. It’s a nonrefundable credit that will reduce your tax bill but won’t increase your tax return.

Another federal tax credit is designed to offset the cost of upgrading your home with an EV charger. Once you have installed a charger, you can claim up to 30% of the project’s cost on your taxes thanks to the Alternative Fuel Vehicle Refueling Property Credit. Note that this credit is only available if you live in a low-income or non-urban area.

Businesses can also claim these two tax credits to save money when planning for fleet electrification.

Mississippi EV Charger Rebates

For EV owners, charging at home is generally the most affordable and convenient option. Upgrading your home with a Level 2 EV charger is very accessible and only takes a few hours with the help of a qualified EV charging station contractor.

You can save on this installation project by taking advantage of the 30% federal tax credit for EV chargers.

Additionally, one utility in Mississippi offer EV charger rebates:

Mississippi Power

Mississippi Power has an online marketplace with instant rebates on Level 2 EV chargers, including hardwired and plug-in models. The amount of the rebate varies based on the product you select.

Mississippi EV Charging Rates for Residents

You’ll likely get an advantageous electric rate when charging your EV at home, given that Mississippi utilities charge $0.14 per kWh on average.

You can also charge your EV for less if your electricity provider offers a time-of-use plan. These programs come with a variable rate based on the current demand for electricity. Switching your EV charging to off-peak times can significantly reduce your energy bills.

Coast Electric Power Association

The Coast Electric Power Association can help you save by reducing your electricity usage between 3 p.m. and 6 p.m. in the summer and 6 a.m. to 8 a.m. in the winter. During these on-peak hours, you’ll pay $0.35 per kWh. To make up for this higher rate, you’ll only pay $0.04 per kWh of electricity you use outside of these hours.

Southern Pine Electric Power Association

This Mississippi utility offers time-of-use electricity rates of $0.18 per on-peak kWh and $0.06 per off-peak kWh. In the summer, you’ll get the on-peak rate from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m. In the winter, you’ll pay more between 6 a.m. and 8 a.m. and again from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m.
