Iowa EV Rebates, Tax Credits & Charging Incentives

April 29, 2025

Electric vehicle (EV) adoption is growing slowly but steadily in Iowa.

Between a statewide effort to build a convenient public charging network and many major utilities, electric cooperatives, and local municipal utilities offering rebates on EV chargers, going electric has never been more accessible.

If you’re considering getting an EV in Iowa, read on to explore all the Iowa EV rebate programs and other incentives available to you.

Iowa EV Rebate Programs and Incentives

As of 2025, Iowa has no active EV rebates, tax credits, or incentives at the state level. You can still take advantage of federal tax credits or Iowa EV rebate programs offered via utilities.

Federal EV Tax Credits

Did you know you could claim a nonrefundable credit of up to $7,500 on your federal income taxes after buying an EV? Your income level and the make and model of the EV you get dictate whether you can claim the credit.

You can also claim up to $1,000 on a charging station. These two credits are valid for businesses if you’re looking into building an electric fleet!

Black Hills Energy – Iowa

Black Hills Energy serves 1.2 million customers over eight states, including Iowa. You can claim an Iowa EV rebate as part of the utility’s Ready EV incentive.

Residential EV Charger Incentives

Black Hills Energy will give you a $500 rebate toward a Level 2 charger.

You’ll need to show a receipt for your charger. Note that you can only claim the rebate on a new charger, and you’ll have 45 days from the date of the receipt to do so.

It’s a first-come, first-served rebate valid until the end of 2025 or until the utility runs out of funds.

Once Black Hills Energy approves your rebate, you’ll receive the $500 as a check.

Non-Residential EV Charging Incentives

Black Hills Energy doesn’t have EV charging station rebates for businesses.

MidAmerican Energy Company – Iowa

Headquartered in Des Moines, IA, MidAmerican Energy Company is one of the major electric utilities in Iowa.

Residential EV Charger Incentives

MidAmerican Energy Company can help you save big on EV charging. All you have to do is sign up for an optional time-of-use rate.

If you enroll, you’ll only pay $0.06 per kWh between 10 p.m. and 8 a.m. Your rate will go up to $0.07 per kWh outside of these hours in the winter. In the summer, you’ll pay $0.20 per kWh during on-peak hours from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m. Outside of these hours, you’ll pay $0.09 per kWh.

Non-Residential EV Charging Incentives

MidAmerican Energy Company doesn’t have any EV charging station rebates for businesses.

For fleets interested in at-home charging, the time-of-use rate listed above can be a good way to cut refueling costs.
