Dominion Energy, a major Virginia utility with over 2.5 million customers, is committed to making electrification more accessible through a variety of innovative programs.

For Dominion Energy customers, these programs offer significant upfront and ongoing savings for driving electric and strategically charging an EV at home.

In this article, we explore how Dominion Energy EV charger rebates, time-of-use plans, and partnerships can help you in reducing the total cost of going electric while also ensuring a convenient at-home charging experience.

Virginia EV Rebate Program

In 2021, the state of Virginia adopted an EV rebate program with provisions for a $2,500 rebate per vehicle purchased, but this program unfortunately has not yet received funding.

In the future, it’s possible that Virginia residents will have additional opportunities to save if this program receives funding.

The most significant savings, however, come from utility incentives for EV charging and federal tax credits, making electrification more accessible and affordable for Virginians.

Dominion Energy EV Incentives

As previously mentioned, while the state of Virginia does not currently offer direct rebates for EV purchases, residents can still find ways to save on EVs and enjoy added benefits of driving electric.

For instance, drivers with a Clean Special Fuel license plate can enjoy HOV lane exemptions, allowing them to enjoy the benefits without meeting set occupancy limits.

Dominion Energy EV Charger Rebates

Dominion Energy offers an incentive for reducing your electricity usage during periods of high demand, contributing to a more stable and reliable grid.

Once you enroll in the utility’s EV Charger Rewards program, you’ll become eligible for a one-time $125 rebate if you apply within 120 days of the EV charger installation. Going forward, you’ll receive a $40 gift card every year on the anniversary of your enrollment, providing an added incentive to remain in the program.

By signing up for this program, Dominion Energy will have the ability to make adjustments to your EV charging schedule and even temporarily reduce charging speed during periods of peak energy demand.

These events, capped at a maximum of 45 per year and no more than 15 per month, can last up to four hours each, ensuring you maintain reliable access to EV charging while also helping contribute to a resilient grid and supporting your community.

Dominion Energy Peak Time Rebates

While not exclusively limited to EV owners, Dominion’s Peak Time Rebates program offers an interesting alternative to the utility’s EV Charger Rewards program.

Keep in mind that participants are currently eligible to enroll in only one of the two programs, so weight both options carefully to determine which program will be most beneficial for you.

Under this program, Dominion Energy will notify participants of demand spikes through an app, prompting a voluntarily reduction of energy consumption for three to four hours. The utility calls approximately 10 of these events a year.

During each event, Dominion Energy will calculate your energy savings by comparing your energy consumption to your average energy use over the same hours during the previous 10 days. Based on this calculation, you’ll receive a $1.25 credit on your bill for every kWh under your average energy consumption.

Dominion Energy’s Partnership With Qmerit

Through its recent partnership with Qmerit, North America’s leading network of EV charger installers, Dominion Energy is making at-home EV charging more accessible than ever.

Customers can fill out a pre-qualification form for the Dominion Energy Virginia Residential Charger Program and the utility will then refer them to a Qmerit charging advisor who will review the EV charging project and determine the complexity and cost of installing an EV charger at home.

Once you decide to go ahead with the installation, you’ll also have the option to spread out the cost of the charging equipment and home charger installation on your monthly utility bills to reduce the upfront cost. Additionally, income-qualifying customers can get a free charger and free installation.

The charger will be installed by a qualified EV charger installer trained and certified by Qmerit to ensure the highest safety and quality possible, along with a five-year warranty and maintenance package from Qmerit.
