The Best National Parks for EV Charging
8 Min. Read
With plenty of charging networks and EV charging stations popping up across the country, range anxiety is quickly becoming a thing of the past for many Americans. In fact, as of October 2025, there are over 231,000 Level 2 and DC fast EV charging ports in the United States.
DC fast charging is by far the quickest method, capable of refueling an EV battery to 80% in around 30 minutes, but even so, public Level 2 charging options should not be overlooked.
You may be surprised to learn that at many camp sites, you can refuel an EV with a portable charger in a 120-volt outlet. Even faster charging is possible with the 30-amp and 50-amp outlets often located at RV sites.
In 2025, there’s never been a better time to road trip in an EV! Let’s explore why:
Levels of EV Charging Explained
Before diving into our spotlight of the best national parks in America for road tripping in an EV, let’s quickly explain the different levels of EV charging.
Level 1 Charging
Level 1 EV charging uses a 120V outlet and is accessible to most EV drivers since they only require a charging cable and can be plugged into an existing outlet, often without the need for any infrastructure updates.
Level 1 charging delivers around 3-5 miles of range per hour, which is admittedly slow, but for those who plan to camp at a National Park for a few consecutive nights, a Level 1 EV charger can potentially recharge your EV battery to 100% by the time you’re ready to head out. It’s a last resort, but hey, it’s better than nothing!
Level 2 Charging
Level 2 EV charging is a much more popular and significantly more convenient option, available for both public charging and at-home charging. It requires a dedicated 240V circuit and provides 16 to 80 amps, depending on the electric vehicle supply equipment (EVSE) and EV in question.
Level 2 charging delivers 20 to 60 miles of range per hour on average, which makes it ideal for overnight charging. Depending on the EVSE and the EV, a Level 2 EV charger can fully recharge an EV battery in as little as 4 to 10 hours.
Level 3 or DC Fast Charging
Level 3 EV charging, also known as DC Fast Charging (DCFC), requires a voltage of 480V up to 1000V. As a result, DC Fast charging is generally only available for commercial or industrial electrical infrastructure.
This high-powered, fast-charging method can add 3 to 20 miles of range per minute to an EV battery, meaning that most EVs can be fully charged in under one hour.
DC fast charging is great for quick stops during road trips, with Level 2 charging being a great alternative for longer stops and overnight parking.
Do National Parks Have EV Chargers?
In 2025, many national parks already have Level 2 EV chargers in or around the park. There are also quite a few DC fast chargers located within a short drive of some of the best national parks in America.
And, as a last resort or extra peace of mind, most national parks have standard 120-volt outlets at campgrounds. Many even have 30-amp or 50-amp outlets (referred to as “electrical hookups”) at RV camping spots that can be used for EV charging with the right hardware and adapters.

Summary
As you can see from above, Level 2 charging is best utilized where you park your car for multiple hours (like your driveway, garage, or in this case, your campsite). By contrast, DC fast charging is only recommended when traveling or when your available time to charge is very limited (like on a road trip).
For a high rate of success, charge your EV to 100% full the night before you depart on your national park adventure, and use navigation in the car or your preferred charging network’s app to plan for and locate EV charging stations along your route.
Look for destination charging to finish your day, and have a portable charger handy in the event that you need to plug in to electrical hookups at your campsite. Don’t forget your EV adapter if you plan to use a 30-amp hookup!
Keep in mind that higher temperatures and faster driving speeds will decrease an EV’s range. But with a little bit of planning, you can enjoy an adventurous national park road trip in an EV in 2025.
